There were some real questions about the wisdom of our final move as dawn broke and we still slogged up the line. The prior near fishless day, the miserable conditions the night before – all were sacrifices; some planned/anticipated, some not. Understanding that this was an unorthodox all in play from the start the result of this day would define the fishing success of this voyage, or not. Just another day in the office, high stakes in this arena are the norm; the reason of course we are all out here. It wouldn't be fun, exhilarating, entertaining, or rewarding if it always came easy.
Quality tuna were the quarry, geography be damned, as we pushed north over the Frontera (International Border), in search of blue or yellowfin tuna in a size class anywhere over twenty five pounds. It took some doing, consistent with the fishing theme of this run from the start, but we ultimately squared everyone in the drivers seat at least once providing the chance to land one of the elusive, coveted prizes. Throw in a fair bounty of consolation, 18 – 25# yellowfin tuna, with even a few up to 30#'s, and the afternoon of steady fishing and catching settled the score. Success was achieved albeit in relative proportion. Far from the greatest day of catching ever the flavor of long range quality was there; exactly what we were after.
So ends the 2015 Phillips Steel five day voyage. A successful run in several respects but none more so than the satisfaction delivered by a group of individuals intent upon unwinding amongst good friends and good times on the high seas. I've said many a time before that positive perspectives have a way of producing positive results. This voyage is an ideal example of that guiding philosophy. Many thanks to the entire group of anglers with a special nod to charter master Todd Phillips, and Phillips Steel. Camera problems solved (battery) I managed to capture an image today in which all of us fisherman long to be among the subjects. Maynor Hernandez did the job well dispatching this seventy three pound bluefin tuna in short order when his chance arrived.
