Royal Star
11/04/12
Not the pace of yesterday on the mid graders but a worthy outing nevertheless. The ratio of
larger, 40 - 55# yellowfin, with one highlight standout at 81#, was the same and conditions
were perfect for a morning at the rail. Light breeze, warm sunshine without being too hot,
fishing current ideal for coaxing fly lined baits into the right zone - it was another
classic, signature day of fall long range ridge fishing.
Again a few skin were in the mix as well as a few yellowtail, dorado, and of course wildly
entertaining stripped marlin that elicit cheers both when they jump after being hooked and
almost inevitably break off shortly thereafter. By mid day the tuna were far more
interested in swindling us out of our sardines than biting crashing around instilling false
hope as teased anglers employed the best of their skills to no avail. They were done
biting. It was time to move on.
With plenty of ridge action and variety now under our belts we are well set for the next
phase favoring the pursuit of trophy yellowfin for at least a day or two. After departing
our zone of choice we slid south checking a couple of well traveled areas on the way down.
Taking advantage of our position a little extra time was invested in a quick stop to top
off our tanks setting us up in short order jugged with green mackerel for the next
endeavor. Favorable weather promises to make the fishing part of the equation enjoyable;
we'll see how the catching goes.
Photo of the day features long time Royal Star veteran Fred Lee with a bonus, random big
Wahoo he picked off on the fast troll while we were heading down the line. As the photo
tells there was some good humor surrounding this moment that paid big dividends in the form
of classic memories and fine table fare.
