Royal Star Fish Report

Royal Star
I intentionally avoided the word expectation in yesterday's narrative recognizing that when it comes to fishing in general expectation rarely aligns with anticipation; and when it comes to this time of year much success is underpinned by providence. Not that results are pure luck by any means, a boat load of fishing takes place on the bridge in the form of both strategic positioning and physical looking, but the exact timing of when the main vein arrives is not on our shoulders; though as much as I know this it never makes missing any easier.
I will offer again however that knowing this is that transition period our anticipation during search missions at this time of year is tempered by much experience and, believe it or not, patience. While patience is not my foremost virtue it is vital in this case. It is a matter of time and effort; and then providence if one adheres to the traditional format. Of course shit house luck supersedes all, but we're too seasoned to depend on it. There is that twinge of hope however; always at least a twinge of the lottery player's optimism; that and the eternal fisherman's optimism that sends us forth in the first place.
All of this added up to one lonely albacore today. One lonely, eighteen pound longfin that was definitely not alone. We saw other indications, a few bluefin jumpers, and a few scattered, wild small spots, but none of it added up yet. Vanguards, everything we saw and instinct speak to the fact that we are seeing the preliminary few, or were on the periphery of something more; my guess is the former. It is a matter of time and conditions.
Conditions are good though and consistent with what we like to see at this time of year. That said day's end found us continuing south as the obvious feeling that the offshore set up needs more time to develop drove us on. It appears that Mother Nature seeks to chafe with another round of blustery conditions but nothing other than that; good fishing minimizes the effects. It is pretty cut and dry now - time to get down to business.
Photo today features Baja Fish Gear's Sam De La Torre with the kickoff albacore of our 2011 summer season taken on a blind, mid morning troll strike. It is a start that we'll gladly take. One down, a few thousand to go. Come on.
