Royal Star Fish Report

Royal Star
We rounded out day four on the inside with another morning of solid action on yellowfin tuna mixed in size from 70 to 150 pounds with a couple of larger standouts. The best of it was from 0530 to 0930 after which we poked around, picked, and scratched for the remainder of the day. And another glorious day it was. The ideal conditions created in the giant protected lee side of Isla Socorro are a slice of heaven; especially when the weather is less than desirable on the outside. To sit and fish in such comfort knowing that sloppy weather is so close by feels like we are getting away with something, and believe me, we are.
Another fifty something quality tuna were released carrying tags before we shifted the program to focus on the one or two jumbos that almost always seem to be lurking around. There are times of course when the big fish are right in the mix, today was a perfect example, but quite often the odd giant is taken by holding fast on the anchor and waiting for the union of chance, preparation, and opportunity. After such consistent exceptional fishing during the past couple of mornings this was the mid day and early afternoon approach.
In the end we got a few chances, checked a few spots off the list, and thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to step back and absorb the beautiful surroundings that have blended into the relentless drive for production over the past few days. Today we took our time recognizing the fine details along the way. And after such exceptional fishing during the past few days, that has definitely worn everyone a little thin, the break was savored by all.
Now it is time to answer the call from the west as we have definitely left our mark on the inside. I can't say the move away from the heavenly lee is anticipated with pleasure, based solely on the fact that breezy conditions are forecast for the next couple of days on the outside, but the time has come and we will go as necessary. The present plan is a short stop by Roca Partida tomorrow before continuing the trek to Clarion to finish out our final four days. We'll see how the fish feel about our strategy.
Today's photo features Don Franks with the signature "Big Gear" that serves him so well. Both Don and I have a running chuckle about the results he consistently produces using the caveman tackle amidst the numerous souped up mini rigs featuring every gimmick in the book. Actually the running chuckle is about almost everything as Don's easy going demeanor and jovial nature is quick to draw the humor from the countless scenarios that unfold out here by the minute. And as I am always game for a good laugh I am glad for his company. In today's shot Don reefs on a good one with Cape Pearce prominent in the background.
