While we consider personal character the defining quality of the fishermen we recognize as Royal Star Anglers of the Month, pure fishing ability is also taken into account. And while we do consider March 2011 angler of the month an individual of high esteem, genuine personality, and solid character, he is also among the finest elite of anglers boasting extraordinary ability. Both before hooking a fish (the actual fishing part of the equation), and after (the catching portion) find journeyman angler Todd Phillips mastering the situation.

I can say with complete certainty that in our realm a better overall fisherman does not exist. Todd is one of those anglers from whom everyone benefits when he is on board Royal Star. The ability to observe, but more important, the ability to absorb knowledge from Todd is easy with his amenable nature. What I have really noticed about Todd, and his willingness to share what he has learned from many years of putting his passion into practice, is the simplicity of his approach and explanations. Now we all describe our actions how we may, but suffice to say that some are prone to long winded explanations of certain things that would be better said in fifty words or less.

Todd's practical approach defies every Rube Goldberg method the most self-righteous "experts" can muster. And, it makes sense; much to the chagrin of those who believe that something other than the application of common sense is necessary to overcome the challenges to becoming a proficient angler. It isn't. And Todd is happy to offer such simplicity to anyone interested. With or without knowing it, there are many anglers out there catching more fish as a result of something Todd said or did.
We extend the utmost respect for Todd and his fishing achievements as well as congratulations on his upcoming matrimony to longtime sweetheart Trina Pena. In addition we look forward to many future voyages with Todd sharing the past while creating the next round of yarns.
