Royal Star Fish Report

8-11-2009
Royal Star

I have to relate that I am not the least bit surprised that the showing on bluefin, yellowfin, and jumbo albacore occurred right on schedule as predicted. In addition, the set up is following the script set forth back in July with all three species filling in on the local grounds and mixing to produce very good "mixed bag" action offshore. The best part of all is that the fish are well distributed spread out in small groups over a broad zone favoring sport fishing in every way. It has been a long time since we have seen a set up favoring drift style fishing. It now appears that the beginning of that pattern is here. All of us are ecstatic as a result. Finally, finally the local guys are getting their licks in as the fish have moved well into one day range. There is going to be some real whomping on the offshore front over the next few weeks.

In our case we landed on them early finding a good hit on bluefin early that consisted of half fifteen pound fish and half thirty five to fifty pounders. We were all fired up and ready to get down to some real business in a zero competition new area but did not connect again after that good first go around. As our network of information began crackling and the phone began ringing we quickly recognized that it was not a day to hunker down and work a postage stamp. It was day to continue the search as the fish were up in many zones and biting. The potential for the big hit was too great.

During the morning action I was very glad that my friend Tom Walker, whom I met and fished with on Royal Star now for many years, was on the bridge to experience the information gathering process that led to the afternoon catch of jumbo Albacore and yellowfin that put the finishing touch on our already excellent catch from Guadalupe. The value of our extensive network of resources was crystal clear as a complete picture of the offshore zone was rapidly developed and our plan was adjusted to take advantage of the bounty. It took a little running to get into position, but the results were worth it as we enjoyed a final three hours of catching mixed 18 - 30# yellowfin tuna and 25 - 38# Albacore. I attribute a tremendous amount of our fishing success to the friendships and resources we have developed out here over the past twenty five years. There was no better example of that belief than what occurred today. Just like any business, information is king.

So we finished off in fine style ending the voyage on the high note of good fishing action. Once again, with today's results, we nailed the three coveted categories - quality, quantity, and variety identifying this voyage as a complete fishing success. Quality Guadalupe yellowfin tuna and yellowtail, and beautiful offshore bluefin tuna and jumbo albacore. That is how we like it.

In closing for this voyage, we want to thank all anglers for their participation and dedicated effort as their fishing success, especially at Guadalupe, was a result of many combined hours at the rail. It was our sincere pleasure to work with these guys who kept the atmosphere light and fished like old friends together. Thank you in particular to Tom Walker who headed up this annual Michael Q charter with poise and style. Now it is time to begin the next adventure with tomorrow's turn around on our annual Pfishcadora four day charter. With the present offshore potential on mixed yellowfin, bluefin, and jumbo albacore, we are chomping at the bit to get back out in the action. There is more very good fishing soon to come. If you have been waiting to venture a local offshore trip make your plans. The time has arrived.
