Royal Star Fish Report

Royal Star
Today was very similar to the prior with a couple of shots when the bigger tuna were eager and many attempts when they were all show and no go. It made for an active day that provided some kind of motivation to stay at the rail from just about dawn to dusk. Even after dusk, as the case turned out, with a good hit on big, 30 - 45# yellowtail in the dark that lasted until after midnight for the heartier anglers. Actually, all anglers fit that description as they enjoyed the flat calm, tranquil night brilliantly illuminated by the blazing full moon while pulling on big yellows. The setting was tranquil but the atmosphere was vibrant as everybody whooped, cajoled, and encouraged one another while they were doubled over getting dragged around by the highly spirited, tough as nails jacks that ran across our baits on their night foraging mission. What an ending for a day that perfectly defined what fishing this amazing offshore island is all about. I have said it about a million times now - fishing paradise. No place we fish at this time of year offers the consistent opportunity to target trophy yellowtail and yellowfin tuna like Guadalupe. Combined with the almost guaranteed flat calm conditions the gigantic lee side this island is famous for, a better setting for fishing is virtually impossible to contrive.
Of course anglers almost always have to work at it, and be on their best game to realize the potential Guadalupe is not quick to relinquish. But that in itself is part of the allure of fishing at this incredible island. It is kind of like what I was mentioning last week about the offshore fishing in July elevating everyone's game separating those at the top from the average or marginal. Aside from the occasional banner day when the odds are mercifully leveled by good biting fish, this island brings out the best in angler's ability. Those who are exceptional, use premium, impeccably maintained equipment, and apply dedicated effort to their favorite past time are generally rewarded with the fruit of this fishing paradise - trophy yellowfin tuna and yellowtail. This voyage, like so many others at this spectacular island, is no different.
Now we move on with plans to finish off tonight and move on towards home tomorrow morning. With the weather up it promises to be a little bumpy traveling up the line but it is well worth it. After two full days and nights it is time to re acquaint ourselves with the fact that we are on a boat in the middle of the ocean. We are well prepared and ready to take it in stride. It is all part of the experience. Look for the final report of this voyage tomorrow and please, have a great day.
