Well I have made all the boasts and tall claims about this crew and their affection for the big day. Meeting the challenges that come with delivering on our commitment of producing premium quality product amidst the intensity of wide open catching on 50 - 80# yellowfin tuna, or any size tuna for that matter, is when they are at their finest. Today we had our chance - and then some. At one point during the big morning hit I looked up at Randy on the tank and asked him if he thought we had hit high gear yet. Beautiful grade tuna and Wahoo were pouring over the rail, eight to ten fish were hooked at all times, tuna and Wahoo were crashing all around the boat, and crewman Sean Bickel and I were giving it everything we had to keep the steady stream of perfectly handled, fully dressed fish flowing into the RSW tanks. Randy's response was classic as he said it looked like we went right through high gear and straight into overdrive. I guess to fully appreciate the moment one would have to be there as the banter between us is somewhat foreign otherwise. I can tell you that such comic dialogue, and the incredible kinship this crew has forged under such circumstances, is what keeps us going. That and our epic groups of anglers who have the tendency to join right in when the boys get going.
Needless to say it was a big day down here at Alijos with everyone, anglers and crewmen alike, getting their full share of action. Following a mid morning ripper on tuna and wahoo there was a merciful afternoon lull but that came to an abrupt end as evening arrived with another full speed ripper on tuna that lasted into the dark. Man what a bite. So the day of phenomenal fishing in near flat calm, balmy conditions ended with flash photos and celebration as anglers rejoiced and enjoyed the moment satiated by the day's events. The essence of long range fishing. That description best describes this day.
With such incredible fishing right here we really can't find any reason to leave. Not until after the morning hit anyway. I don't want to get too far ahead of things though. We still have our work cut out for us as we have plenty of time remaining and a species list we aim to fulfill. Honestly however, at this point it is not about quantity. Quality, the best of the best is now our goal. More fine weather is forecast to grace the effort and we are certainly warmed up so we'll try to keep the ball rolling with another good morning tomorrow.
