Royal Star Fish Report

2-6-2008
Royal Star

This was far from the strong finish we were hoping for with our final day dishing out a healthy portion of humble pie in sloppy sea conditions. Thankfully we had our prior two day's action to revisit and embellish as the long morning search segued into an equally long afternoon with the merciful exception of one stop that produced a single one hundred eighty seven pounder for long time Royal Star veteran Walt Howard. Overall we did manage to catch another handful or two of the smaller grade tuna from various stops but the trophy yellowfin were simply absent with plenty of dolphins around that were traveling today less the company of their piscine friends.

So as the sun dipped into what was a much better sea condition in the late afternoon we ran out of time and called it a successful voyage beginning the quick ten hour run to Cabo San Lucas in preparation for our arrival tomorrow morning.

Regardless of the lackluster finish, the trip was a winner and a fine example of what anglers can hope for on a ten day Fly Down/ Fly back voyage with seven full days of fishing time in the ten day period and a good variety of scenery and fishing action on multiple grades of yellowfin tuna. Of course trophy yellowfin are the prize and what most anglers are hoping for and in this respect we were again very fortunate with good oportunities at the jumbos on several occasions during the trip. In the quantity category we are more than satisfied with a robust catch of both beautiful, fresh RSW tuna and frozen "canners" for anglers, their families, and plenty of friends to enjoy at the table until their next long range adventure.
So, again we are calling the voyage a fantastic success and wish to extend our gratitude to this group of anglers for joining us. As a perfect example of how a mixed group of anglers melds into one throughout the course of these voyages, this group is a perfect example of why the fishing element on these trips is only one component in the equation of success. Thank you again to all of you as your positive participation is what makes ten days at sea with eighteen anglers so much fun and such a good time.
Now Captain Brian Sims takes the helm for the passage up the line in preparation for our Saturday, February 9th arrival in San Diego. Capt. Sims will continue updates as he pilots Royal Star up the line closely monitoring reports from the guys below in preparation for our next voyage departing February 10th. In the meantime I will bow out for a few days taking a little time before the next voyage to catch up on happenings shoreside. Look fishing reports from the Revillagigedo islands to begin on the 15th as we begin our coveted stint in the tagging zone. We can't wait and will keep everyone posted accordingly.
