Royal Star Fish Report

Our first day of offshore fishing began with a few short stops on 18 - 35# yellowfin tuna then went into one of those classic long dry spells that are the signature of this type fishing. Indeed the other signature of offshore fishing is rapid change and all of us who have fished albacore in the past can certainly relate; a long afternoon, nodding off by the engine room hatch, enduring that long trolling rotation that feels like it will never end. Just when one is about to throw the towel in and head down below to take a nap, HOOKUP! Bait goes over the side, fish are crashing up the chumline, one, two, five, eight fish are hooked on live bait; instant pandemonium; zero to sixty in five seconds. We lived this exact scenario yesterday finding the mother lode school of yellowfin tuna that won the best bite of the past month award hands down. The ravenous school was so voracious that anything going over the side was fair game including dead, half eaten baits flowing out the scuppers and any form of artificial lure one cared to throw three hundred sixty degrees around the boat. No doubt about it, yesterday was our lucky day as we ended up being the chosen one among the handful of boats in our area. There was however plenty of other good fishing going on with some of the kelps kicking out nice scores on quality dorado as well as a fair smattering of this beautiful grade of offshore yellowfin. In addition, it looks like things up above in the local zone are finally waking up following a long dry spell. This beautiful grade of yellowfin tuna appears to be showing up in force and is finally in a biting mood. As long as the weather cooperates, it looks like there is going to be some fantastic action on the local boats coming into the full moon next week. As we now have a beautiful catch in the hatch, we are now in quality mode and will focus our efforts towards the goal of everyone getting at shot at some trophy yellowfin and yellowtail over the next couple of days.
