Bruce Smith docked Shogun at Fisherman's Landing January 5 after a ten-day trip with 25 anglers. They took four tuna over 200 pounds.
Just missing the 300-pound mark, the 296.1-pound yellowfin caught by Justin Livingston of Irvine was top dog.
"He fought like hell," said Justin, an assistant manager for construction projects. "I hooked him at dusk and he took me around the boat eight times, way into the dark. He came up on the bow. It was my first ten-day trip, and my first cow."
Justin baited his monster tuna with a sardine on a 5/0 ringed Super Mutu hook tied to 80-pound Izorline, with 90-pound Seaguar fluorocarbon leader and 100-pound Power Pro Spectra on a Tiagra 30 reel and a Calstar 7465 M rod.
Phil Castillo of Newport Beach bagged a 265-pounder, good for second place, on a sardine pinned to a 7/0 ringed Super Mutu hook. He fished with a 130-pound Basil wind-on leader and 130-pound Spectra on a Penn 50 S reel and a Calstar Boomer rod. The fight went 35 minutes, he said.
"He was a different fish," he noted. "He bit at mid-day, and he porpoised on my bait. He fought high and hot. He stayed up on top, and took me around the boat. Once he came across the stern, just looking at us. We got him up on the bow. I used a double San Diego knot to tie the hook. He's my best fish by double."
"What are you gonna do with him," I asked.
"I've got six kids," he said. "We'll eat him."
Seong Song of La Crescenta won third place for his 229-pounder. He fished a sardine on an 8/0 Eagle Claw hook tied to 130-pound Izorline and 130-pound Izor Spectra. He used a Penn 50 VSW reel and a Calstar 760 H rod to catch his best fish ever in 45 minutes.
Adam Masuda of Santa Ana caught a 228.8-pounder, just two-tenths of a pound off the next-best fish. Adam baited a squid on a 12/0 Mustad Demon hook, tied to 130-pound Soft Steel Ultra line and 130-pound Izor Spectra on a Penn 50 S reel and a Calstra 765 H rod, cut down and wrapped by Yo's. The fight lasted one hour.
"He was the only squid fish on the trip," Adam remarked, "and he was the last cow of the trip and my best fish."
The count of tuna over 300 pounds now stands at 17 for the season.
