final day

Not much to report from the final day in the way of fishing, or better said catching. A few drops on various hard bottom zones and kelp lines through mid morning entertained the timeless fishing spirit more than anything. Everything from halibut and lingcod to yellowtail and bonito made for plenty of laughs and good natured ribbing as the morning passed in perfect, flat calm conditions. Free of stress and pressure we called it a trip just prior to the lunch bell heading up the line in preparation for an early morning arrival tomorrow. An epic catch of 60 – 150 pound yellowfin tuna and 25 – 45 pound yellowtail in the hatch, with a fine sprinkling of variety, places the 2015 annual Ventura County Angler's ten day voyage square in the category of success.

Much gratitude is extended to the entire group of stellar individuals all of whom contributed the success of this run. Success on any voyage is attributed to more than just fishing. How individuals interact and with one another at the rail and otherwise is what sets the tone. In this respect I must commend every angler on board and extend my appreciation for their participation. But special mention and gratitude is reserved for Charter Master Brian Zimmerman. Brian has spearheaded this voyage going on twenty years now. A remarkable man at 80 years young Brian brings character to these voyages flavorful and distinct. Purposeful and driven Brian sets a fine example of what can be accomplished through confident determination and amenable character. In short he is the perfect guy to share ten days at sea with, exactly why this charter is going on twenty years strong. Thank you Brian.

Our final voyage photo is one snapped on the fly as veteran angler Mike Reardon's eighty five pound yellowfin slides over the rail. Royal Star veteran angler Steve Bernd shares in the moment still reveling in the success of a 100 pound plus yellowfin he landed just prior to this beauty hitting the deck.
